Time To Create Again!

Standard

Anyone who knows me, knows I haven’t been very productive in quite a while.  I’ve tried, but somehow I just haven’t been able to find inspiration…until now!

A couple of months ago, I signed up to be part of the Sketchbook Project!

For the last few summers I have watched each year as this project unfolds, and in the back of my mind, thinking one year I would join in.  This was that year!  Of course, I needed another project, but what better time to start an art project than when you’re  busy, right?  My thinking was that it is only 32 pages, and certainly a little project like that would be a snap for me!  The other thing is, we are all busy all the time anyway, so why wait?

After getting back into our home since having bamboo floors laid in the entire house (studio included), I think I’m ready to start thinking about putting pen to paper, and leaving my mark on whatever community it will be going to.  That’s not to say that everything is perfect in our home.  After all, some of the paintings still remain stacked in the corner waiting to find their rightful place on the wall.  The livingroom looks new, and fresh.   I’ve changed things around, replaced some things, and gotten rid of others.  It feels like a new home to me, and now I’m ready to get back to sketching, and painting!

It’s interesting how something like this can give us an entire new outlook on just about everything, and I find myself energized, and inspired!

Who knows how long it will take me to complete this sketchbook.  The project needs to be mailed back by January 15, 2014, so I really do have plenty of time.  Anything goes this time, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do, anything, whatever feels right!  Poetry, sketches, collage, ink, pen, you name it.

In the next few weeks, or maybe I should say, next couple of months, I’ll be posting the pages I work on, and you can tell me what you think.  Make suggestions,  I’m always open for comments, in fact I love getting comments, it keeps me motivated!

Finding The Time!

As I get older, my life seems to be flashing in front of my eyes!

Certainly twenty, or thirty years ago my life was much busier, so what makes this time more hectic, or why do I seem to have less time?  One reason could be, I don’t have as much energy as I ounce had, or maybe I’m trying to do too much, and not getting anything accomplished in the end!  All that Bee Pollen makes me go in circles!

What ever it is, it’s time for a change!

I keep busy, and at the end of the day, I’m ready to slow down.  The thing is, I haven’t made time, or felt like I had the time for my creativity!  What I love to do the most, is something I haven’t done in quite a while.  Quite a while could mean a week to me!

I’ve been working on my garden…

Spending time with three of my grand-kids…

Shopping…I had to buy new dishes…

AND, A couple of times one of my girlfriends, and myself signed up for an evening of painting while drinking wine!  Oh yeah, it was fun!  I can’t say any of my paintings will ever hand in La Louvre, but after drinking wine, who cares?

I’m still working on the Hacienda painting, and if I don’t start playing with it, I’m sure it will go into the stack of canvases that are all screaming at me to finish them!

All the time, I still have a dog, and a cat, and a husband that needs to be cared for, and get attention!

So what now?

Then it suddenly occurred to me…….at 4:30 this morning

Instead of laying awake until 7:30 in the morning so I don’t disturb my husband, I need to get up, have my tea, and paint!  Or even write, anything would be an improvement!  I use to do this a long time ago, but our home is small now, and any noise seems to disturb  him.  So for Fathers Day, I’ve decided to buy him – ear plugs!  And, start getting up really early when my creative juices are flowing!

That should do it!

The Week Before Easter

Standard

It’s spring break

Around here the traffic is heavy, the restaurants are packed, shopping is difficult, & finding a parking spot nearly impossible! I say this only because, I’m not the one on spring break. Not me, I’m older than dirt, and all we do is complain about the “young wiper snappers!”

Not So…

I rarely complain, except to complain to a complainer about their complaining! As a matter of fact, I make it a practice to say only good things, and if I ever say anything bad about anyone, I always say,  “Bless their heart!” One of my friends told me that you can say anything you want about anyone without consequences, if you follow it with “Bless their heart!” That’s how you get away without being struck dead by lightning and stuff!

The week before Easter…

That was the week it turns out was my grandson Connor’s spring break, and this is where he landed. Yep that’s right, here at grandmas house. Sounds quaint doesn’t it? My son-in-law John is still here working in my son’s yard next door, so there is a slight distraction for Connor. He comes here with his dad, and gets to catch lizards, work in my studio, swim, or today he brought his metal detector.

Cool…

It would have been cool if he had found the treasure he was looking for. I guess it’s the kind of thing you have to practice doing for a long time in order to find truck loads of money!  Connor is a determined kid, and smart also, so if there is money to be found, I’m guessing he’ll find it!  And I’m hoping he finds it here so I get it, and I can get away with giving him a finder’s fee!

It’s been a long week!

By the end of the week, Connor was ready to stay home, Grandpa was ready for some peace and quiet, and I was ready to paint. I have to admit, it’s difficult to find energy to stand and paint when it’s been a zoo all week. But, small blocks of time to paint are possible, and that’s where I’ll be, in my studio painting, if anyone wants to find me!

Model for the day!

Model for the day!

Over the weekend, my friend and Art Sister, LaRetta took a class at the ArtBeat on Main Street in Vista. It’s a trendy gallery that the area is much in need of!  Scott Pryor was the artist,  and we were fortunate to have Billy as our model. Billy even brought his little dog, “Kilo” with him. Kilo spent the day visiting with everyone, and protecting the gallery from imminent danger!   Standing on concrete from 9am until 4pm,  left us all exhausted and ready to break out the wine…

But the wine had to wait!

Cleaning up all our supplies, packing them into the car, and driving home was about all we were good for,but we did it!

It has been years since my life drawing classes and my only thought was,  “Crap, how am I going to do this?”  Kicking my ego to the curb, I dug in like I knew what I was doing, and had a great time!  There were only including the instructor, so it was small enough to watch, ask questions, and paint without bumping into someone else.  Since my easel is far too large to be stuffed into the car, borrowing one from the gallery seemed like a good idea.

Believe it or not,

I  had to get help to set the easel up!  All my portable easels were old watercolor easels, and would never work for all it needed to do!  Once the gallery  easel was up, I set about fixing the acrylic paint so it wouldn’t dry out. Retarder  was the item of the day, and that was a   Snap!…

This isn’t perfect, far from it, but it was my first try at painting a portrait on location without the help of a sketch to get started!  There is much to be learned from painting this way, least of all – “ pay attention! “

Will I be doing this again?

You bet I will!  I had so much fun, and I love the idea of doing a painting in a day!  That’s why I loved abstract so much, get in, get out!  And it’s done!  However, once again it’s Practice, Practice, and more Practice!

The practice never ends!
