About Old as Dirt & Proud of It!

Welcome to Older Than Dirt, and Proud of It by Karen Samenow. I named my blog Older Than Dirt because that's where I am in life. You may find art or music, or inspiration included because, I'm an artist, a spiritual medium, and I'm always learning more and exploring. I hope you find us interesting. My focus for this blog is to bring a little levity to well seasoned women. Sometimes it actually may help!

Good Morning Tuesday

For many weeks now our drain opposite my studio has been stopped up, and we haven’t done a thing to fix it.  With the possibility of rain this winter, I think we’d better get to it before we have a rainy winter, and are unable to work on it.

I’m certain  it’s  filled with just about everything you could think of from grass clippings from when we actually had grass, to dirt, roots, and anything in between. So finally my husband Les decided he would attempt to unclog it.  Fortunately for me, I’m unable to help, but I can ask questions, tell them what to do, and take pictures.  It is certain that neither my husband, nor my son appreciates me as a backseat driver, not to mention taking pictures while they spend hours trying to unclog this drain!

My son Chris, and Les have worked for several days, and they have opened it enough to get a trickle.  I had to remind them that a trickle wasn’t enough.   They just gave me that look!  Grass that had molded, and mud that had turned to concrete are not easily dislodged, but the show must go on!

I try to stay away, but how else can I possibly supervise if I’m out of sight?  So every once in a while, I can’t help myself, I have to check on them making sure they are working up to my specifications.  They don’t always do it my way…….

We have two main drains in the back yard, and when they are open and running perfectly, we don’t have any problems. However, when one is stopped up, and it is always the same drain,  the entire patio fills with water, and doesn’t drain for days.  It most likely dries up, and doesn’t  really drain at all!  Then if we have multiple rain storms, we will be in real trouble.

How much longer will this go on?  Only time will tell.  Les wants to hire the “Drain cleaner man.”  But mama wants to DIY!  Every time I hire someone to fix something, they never do it right, so why not learn a new skill set?  Clearly Les and I have different opinions about this.  Many years ago when I was able to do more strenuous products, I would have worked on that drain until I fixed it,(and I would fix it) but today I’m unable to do this, and have to rely on others.  If my son-in-law weren’t working so many hours, I know he would be here in a minute and clear the drain.  He has many times helped us out…..happily.  I have the best son-in-law in the world.  But he is working now and doesn’t have much down time, so I don’t dare ask him to fix it.

Who will fix the drain……Les and Chris, or an unknown person who will charge us in excess of $200.  I could do a lot with that money.

All I can think of  is SHOPPING, SHOPPING, SHOPPING!

Flipping’ Friday

Sharing this little video has taken me …..forever to get!

The weather has either been getting hot in the mornings, or we are caged in the house because heat, and humidity have been so bad that we have to close up early to avoid as much as possible.  The dog and cat usually play in the living room, and it’s too dark to get a good picture in there.  This morning they stepped it up, and followed us out to the patio where we were having morning coffee.

It’s so cute to see our Pitt Bull, Daisy playing with Kramer the Bengal cat.  One would think Daisy would have an advantage being that “Pitt Bulls are vicious and all!”  And then there is Kramer who doesn’t have any front claws……

But,  “NO”

Kramer is the most aggressive and hasen’t any trouble ruling the roust.  Yet they are our loving companions, and I can’t even imagine our home without both our cat, and dog.  They are our babies….the four legged, fur covered babies, that we look forward to being greeted by when we arrive home.  We think about them, and worry about them when we are away, and can’t wait to curl up with when we arrive back home.

It’s a perfect family, and it’s our perfect little family!

Thursday Time Out For Art

This is an abstract I’m working on.  I have a long way to go I admit.  I started this piece as an experiment, so I’m not afraid to ruin it!  The surprise will be at the end when it doesn’t look like anything I have shown you.

With a studio full of supplies, and more coming in each day.  More supplies mean more projects, and more projects means I’m more productive right?

Wrong!

I’m a terrible artist!  It’s been so hot here that even with air conditioning, I still can’t get anything done.  My studio is stuffy, and hot even though I have a vent for air conditioning, it doesn’t do much to keep it cool in here.

Recently I purchased three deep canvases…..to go along with the twenty new canvases I already have sitting waiting for me to be inspired.  I’m an artist, I can’t pass up a deal!

Tuesday Transfer Day

Image

One of the things I struggle with is printing a transfer.  My printers never seem to be able to handle the thin paper going through the print process without jamming it up.  I have a friend who tapes the top, and about 2/3 down on the sides, and she doesn’t have a problem with it.  She uses a HP printer, and maybe the brand of printer makes a difference.  However, I have changed printers, always looking for one that will do all the little tasks an artist could ask of it, and after about four printers, I still haven’t found a printer without its own mind!

The first video may solve that problem for me, and for any of you who might use this technique.  I usually journal when on vacation, but I do mixed media, and this is perfect for adding interest here and there in my work.

Another way to do the same thing with a little bit of a twist.  Maybe one of you might want to use a different way to get the same result.

The third  technique, I never thought of, but it caught my attention because I do love to make cards.  I love being able to give a personal card to a friend or family member.  For me, the cards in the store are so impersonal, and every time I have to buy one, I cringe.  We all know sometimes that has to happen, but I really do prefer to make my own cards.

I hope you enjoy these three videos,  just maybe you can find a reason to use one of them, or even modify to your own needs.

Maybe one of them will trigger your imagination, and something unexpected will happen!

How About Those Adult Coloring Books

Image

Adult coloring books have become more  popular than ever for their stress-relieving abilities, but how could that be?

We’ve talked about the benefits of Zentangles, and Doodles, but I’ve never really talked about Adult Coloring Books. Hold on……these aren’t the kind of “Adult Books” you might think, they are coloring books even your kids could color in. It is amazing how relaxing coloring is, and the entire family can do this together on a night that is set aside just for family activities!

I have frequently written posts about how doodling, or Zentangling can relieve pain, so can coloring.  It could be that it takes us back to a time that was less stressful….our childhood.  It could also be that we get lost in making sure we color inside the lines, and it looks perfect as if we were six or seven years old. Inside the lines is an activity that is extremely distasteful to me, so in any other circumstances I would never color inside the lines.  But in this case,  I’ll be good, and do it properly!

IMG_0775

Whatever it is, all three of these activities will provide us with relaxation, pain relief, stress relief, and much more.  I just heard that it also helps insomnia, I’ll have to try that.

One more thing, I didn’t post this for a holiday gift, but a nice coloring book, with some colored pencils, or markers would be a fabulous gift for a friend or family member who is constantly stressed out, or maybe a friend or family member  that isn’t stressed would have fun with them also.  Remember coloring is a great pain-reliever, stress reducer, it’s good for all ages,  and some say it’s a way of meditating.

I can’t think of anything better!
