Thursday Time Out For Art

Snake Skin going into jar for tanning.

A couple of weeks ago I posted an article about how my daughter and myself skinned a snake.   Many of you were probably repulsed by this, and I certainly understand that.  I have a good handful of friends that are terrified of snakes for various reasons.  Our society hasn’t helped this stigma about snakes, making it difficult to get over.

My kids have all had snakes while growing up, and since they have never scared me, it made it easy for me to say they could have them.  I did draw the line on spiders…..so I thought.   Eventually, my son did talk me into a South American Red Kneed Tarantula, and I learned to appreciate it, but never fell in love with it.

Never was named

Never was named

Most recently, in August my son bought a Blood Python, and the snake was fascinating, and very beautifully marked.  But, right from the time Chris brought him home, he didn’t act right, and it didn’t take longer than a month to go downhill and die.  Chris has had many snakes, some of which people would bring to him and the snake would be  very ill. Chris has always been able to bring them back, and get them healthy.  But, not this time, and we all felt terrible.

The skin was so beautiful that Chris decided to save the it.  He called many places to try and find somewhere that would skin, and tan a skin without having any luck.  So after watching YouTube videos, I decided I could do it, and off we went to recruit  my daughter.  (I thought she’s going to love this!)

It turned out to be very easy, and the entire job only took maybe two hours at best.  I had thought it would take an entire day.  We were quite successful, and I might say very proud of ourselves.  Scratch that off our Bucket List!

Almost the full length on the skin.

Almost the full length on the skin.

Two weeks later this is what we have.  A beautiful self skin that is well-preserved, perfectly tanned, and ready to take its place on whatever Chris has chosen for it.  Originally it was a guitar strap….we’ll see.

I know this isn’t my usual post for a Thursday, but after all I would consider the color and markings God’s Art!

Zebra Design & Destinations is an inspiring Blog, sponcers Thursday’s post,  and  I’d like you to check them out.

My Heart Is Heavy

Over the weekend, especially Sunday, I have been able to work in my studio without distraction. In part because “Football” has overtaken our house!  In many ways I love it when football season starts, and I can work without interruption.

The truth is…..

I am rattling around trying to get my mind back onto my art, or my blog, and trying so hard to not drop the ball on any of my creating.  The paint or the blog.

Last Friday afternoon, I received   an unexpected phone call as I was leaving the house to take flowers to a sick friend.  I had just picked up my purse, my keys, and  a beautiful bunch of roses in hopes of lifting my friends spirits.  I looked down at my phone and realized I’d missed a call, so everything went back on the kitchen counter to check my message.  As I listened to the message,  I realized it was from a Chaplain at San Diego Hospice calling to inform me of my friends passing the day before.  I was in shock when I heard the news, especially since I was headed to see her before I stopped to check this darn message.  It was as if,  had I not stopped, my friend would still be alive to great me.

Over the past few days my mind has been all over the place, and I’ve had a little trouble concentrating on writing, or painting.  I continue to try….and I’m doing a little at a time.  That’s better than nothing.  Mostly I’ve been reflecting on our amazing friendship.

My dear friend, Barbara Thuro, whom I’ve traveled with, laughed, and cried with.  Gone through hard times, and wonderful times.  Had parties with girlfriends with, sat together during debates, and elections.  Always having a pizza party, with wine, crackers, and cheese,  and always in front of a roaring fire while watching the results of whatever presidential election was taking place at the time.

Barbara has tought me how to plant vegetables, and compost.  She had tirelessly tried to teach me spanish,  and as much as I really wanted to learn, I have only retained a little (poquito).

My heart is heavy for not just my loss, but for everyone’s loss.  Barbara was a painter, a gardener, an author, an environmentalist,  she had a great appreciation for our beautiful earth, humanity, equal rights, she was an educator, and so much more.  I’m going to miss you Barbara, but I hold dear to my heart all the wonderful times we have had together, the wonderful places we have traveled, the times we’ve cooked together, painted together. Cried over our four-legged family members that had passed.  My grandchildren loved her, Barbara always tried to show them something interesting.  Being a teacher for many years knew just how to relate to kids.  They have always love going to Auntie Barbara’s house to sit in the tree house, or watch the koi pond, pick vegetables, or just sit in front of the fire.  We have celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas together.  It is their loss also.

This is such a simple version of who this highly intelligent woman was, and how she lived.  She is an example to us all, she has set the bar high, and I will dearly miss her.

Leha on Connor's shoulder

Leah on Connor’s shoulder

While all the geckos have been getting attention, here is a picture of Connor’s bearded dragon Leah.  She was about the side of the full-grown geckos when he get her, and due to the feeding of crickets, this is how much she has grown.  I’ll bet she isn’t more than one and a half, or two years old.

Her family calls her fat,  I say, “Leah is a full-bodied dragon!”

As we get off and on heat waves, so does my creative energy.  Today happens to be one of those days.  We live ten miles off the ocean, and it has hit 102 degrees at our house.  We didn’t sign up for this heat and humidity, and we haven’t paid for it.  There isn’t anyone who lives on the coast that expects this kind of humidity and heat.

The art for today is all about the Little Gecko without a Tail.  Not too long ago Crunch, the little gecko without a tail, and Megan had two eggs, then before we knew it, Megan laid two more eggs.  Four eggs were marked and put in the incubator, and before we knew it all four eggs hatched.  While we were all excited about four eggs Megan laid six more eggs.

Whoa little Megan…

Slow down girl!  Megan isn’t too fond of being held, or even very sociable.  I think it’s probably because she’s exhausted from running from Crunch,  probably ready to lay more eggs, and wants to do something fun for herself.  Crunch on the other hand, is very sociable.  The minute you open the terrarium door, he jumps on your shoulder, and is more than happy to stay there and visit with whomever it is that wants to play.

One of Megan’s eggs didn’t make it, so right off it was eliminated.  Now there are five eggs left, two of which should be hatching any day now.  This is such a fun thing to have happen while the kids are 4th, & 6th graders.  Kids learn so much from these little creatures.  I can highly recommend geckos as a starter pet.  Care is minimal, they are sociable, and fun to watch.  My grandkids have learned so much from their little creatures.  I hope you have learned a little something by them taking over my blog now and then.

The babies haven’t been given names—-that’s for the new parents to do.  However, while I was writing this post another baby hatched.  Leaving only four eggs.   Now they have five babies, and looking for new homes.
