About Old as Dirt & Proud of It!

Welcome to Older Than Dirt, and Proud of It by Karen Samenow. I named my blog Older Than Dirt because that's where I am in life. You may find art or music, or inspiration included because, I'm an artist, a spiritual medium, and I'm always learning more and exploring. I hope you find us interesting. My focus for this blog is to bring a little levity to well seasoned women. Sometimes it actually may help!

Believe it or NOT!

I finally have the house back together after having to box everything up…..once again to have the wood floors replaced. I do not ever want to do that again. The emotional energy it takes to face all that is nasty, and if I have to face it again, I might just leave home!

Of course, the last to be organized was my studio, with everything landing right there on the way to the garage. It must seem like the right thing to do because it always seems to get the bits and pieces of everything. Some of it, I

can even use in my artwork!
Yesterday I actually worked on it all day long, and I’m happy to say that I only have my drawing pencils to organize and put away. It looks so clean and even inspiring to walk into such a cool, organized studio. There is now two tables instead of only one. One is for paint, the other is for my computer, and sketching. No paint! My easel sits in the corner, and I have even started another painting.

More on Bubbles the Bunny…

Before I get into Bunny Tails…

I want to take the time to thank all of you who follow, and show interest in Stone Soup. As you have probably figured out by now, Stone Soup is a mix of everything.  Ideas, art, nature, and all things that might be of interest.  It takes time to comment on a blog, or even read it, and just like it. I appreciate all of you so much! So Thank you again for your comments, likes, and just  showing interest. The rople who show interest in any way, are the people who keep me going!

Now about Bubbles!

As Bubbles approached motherhood, it became clear to her family that this was only a practice run. Bubbles apparently wasn’t pregnant after all. She was bred, but someone didn’t take it seriously! Every one of her family members were anxiously awaiting the arrival of a gaggle of babies, and no bunny babies!
So off to the breeder Bubbles is going again in a couple of weeks. I have a feeling this isn’t going to stop until Bubbles has her babies.

So be warned, we haven’t heard the last of the Bunny Tails.   Thank you for hopping by, and checking on Bubbles & Dusty.  (Dusty is totally unaware of anything going on in the family!)

Thursday Time out for Art!

What can I say…it’s the prettiest tea cup I have.  Not really being into tea cups, but my son surprised me with this one day.  He thought it was special, and decided to bring it to me.

In our home we usually use big mugs to hold, keep our hands warm, and sip from.  We use them for tea, coffee, and sometimes even soup, or broth.  It’s rather casual here in Southern California, and mugs just seem right especially on a cold, gloomy day!

Happiness IS Art!

Happiness

There are so many things that I love about art, the form of expression, the versatility, meeting of new friends, even the creative energy that is absorbed by going to a gallery.   It’s really difficult to narrow down what I like best.  I do know that if I don’t have time or energy to drag out all my paints, the easel, or  a canvas, I can always sketch.   That takes up very little energy, and maybe a little time, but it still gives me a feeling of accomplishment.

If I have even less energy than usual, I could always doodle.  It’s funny how doodling, or zentangling is so meditative, and calming.  They are good at distracting my mind from something that is bothering me, or if I’m having a good old anxiety attack.   Working on a tangle will cure that every time!

When I’m at a loss for something creative to work on, or blocked from my creative energy, I paint rocks.

Can you believe I don’t have one picture of a rock I’ve painted?  I either give them away, or place them out in the yard, and they weather.

IMG_3107

Crazy?   Well there is that, but this goes even further than that.  Painting rocks is somewhat like a zentangle, or a doodle.  I get lost in it, and pretty soon I find myself thinking of larger projects, and before I know what’s happening……..I’m pulling out something larger, and working on a painting,  or a cigar box, or maybe even greeting cards.

My Studio should be three times the size for all my supplies…..

I have fountain pens, regular pens, watercolor pencils, acrylic inks, watercolors, charcoal, and pencils.  And that’s just the short list.   Brushes, well brushes are all over the place…short ones, long ones,  fat ones, and skinny ones.  Brushes for watercolor, and brushes for oil, or acrylic.   Do I have a favorite?  Yes I do, they are all my favorites.  And my grandchildren can pick the brush they would like most to paint with.  Usually it’s the longest brush in the bunch, blue is almost always the boys choice of color, while my granddaughter will use all colors.  Interesting isn’t it?

Canvases are neatly organized above my bookshelves filled with supplies.  There are canvases larger than myself, some smaller than I will ever work on, and some are in between.   I purchase smaller canvases at Aaron Bros for my grandkids to work on by the pack.  I want them to get the feel of the canvas, and of course they must have decent art supplies to work with.

I remember when I was learning to paint, and only had student grade paints.  It didn’t take me long to figure out how disappointing a piece of art work can be if the colors didn’t sing.  My grandchildren will never know that feeling.  They are all special, and when in my studio they will have special supplies to work with, and most likely go home with some of them also.

So now you know what happens in my studio.  What about yours?  Do you do the same thing, or do you limit the use of your supplies?  Write to me and let me know, I’d love to hear all about it!

Opposites Attract!

This proves it…

Early this morning my husband Les went out to get the paper.  He likes to read the sports section while he has breakfast.  But this morning, unlike any other morning,  instead of receiving the Union Tribune, he got the Wall Street Journal!

My Comment was this…

“Maybe there is a reason you got this paper instead of the one you thought you wanted.  Look through it and see what it says.”

After tossing it to the side, he picked it up once again.  Meanwhile, I walked by the table, and picked up the rest of the paper  looking  through the pages for interesting financial information, after all it was the Wall Street Journal.

What I learned was this…

While I was reading about the latest in financial doom, which was  more than I ever really wanted to know, Les was focused on the silly section.

Here is an opportunity to read something that usually doesn’t drop into our home, and he reads the silly section.  On the other hand, I had to read doom and gloom, something I don’t have control over, and rarely expose myself to.  Then again, something that is important to all of us, is the battery life of our beloved smart phones!

So this proves it!  Opposites do attract!
