My Granddaughter the Artist!
Last weekend my Granddaughter Sage spent the weekend with us. Before she left her house, she told me she wanted an art weekend. Actually she said, ” I want to be able to do art all weekend, just two days to do art, nothing else!”
I think God created granddaughters because we have to make up for what we couldn’t do with our own kids!
Somebody wants to spend the weekend with me…
Sage finished three paintings over the weekend, one of the three was a school project. This piece of her project was completed in a half day. (We got that out-of-the-way!) The other painting was wrapped & given to her Mom as soon as she appeared. (Still needs her Mom at eleven.)
I had such a great time with my granddaughter, and she had a great time creating. (I’m blessed!)
While Sage was painting, and drying her work, I had to work on something. I didn’t want to be looking over her shoulder all day, I wanted her to build her confidence by having some guidance, and letting her fly. ( She’s a flier!)
I worked on my Daisy Dog Pic… Admittedly, I was once again playing, and nothing happened to me…No Anti-playing Police, or the Poor Linework Police, not even the police that monitor the imperfection on ones creative process!
There was a time when I would never have painted with a color that shouldn’t be in its place. It would have to be real or, I wouldn’t do it. I’ve over come nearly a lifetime of being taught perfection, and it being demanded. I broke out of the box, years ago, but not without the expense of everything I painted not being any good – because it wasn’t perfect. I looked around and realized Everything is perfect in its imperfection.
(I love doing different things, and with different ways of expression.)

Everytime I watch something, or take a class, I find there is always something I’d forgotten, or didn’t know at all. Always I walk away with something helpful. I hope you do the same.
Again Betty is all about art, different kinds of art, and if you look at her website, you are sure to find something you can use.

Making a Sharp Left!
Paint on leather
One thing I can tell you for sure…I get bored easily. Most of the artists I know, create in many different ways. We all love to try something new. New colors, new paper, new techniques and the list goes on and on. A few weeks ago my critique group decided we’d do a together project and see what turns out. We decided to paint purses. So off we all went to find a purse we each felt was worthy of painting. I choose canvas, others choose leather, some genuine PVC.
While I was struggling with what to put on my canvas/dacron purse, a small leather travel purse called my name at the top of the shelf in my bedroom closet. It was used one time, I’ve had it for twenty plus years, and I paid a fortune for it in the Cedros District of Solana Beach. A trendy part of Southern California you only shop at if you feel like spending lots of money. I wanted something I could travel with that was small enough to eliminate a regular handbag with all the stuff we carry in it. The purse was so small that I couldn’t get sunglasses into it.
Perfect Guinea Pig for an art project!
Why not paint something on this little purse? After all I never use it, and it’s been up there for twenty or so years.
So for some reason it seemed right to paint a dragon-fly on it, and well… flowers seemed right too! It’s the first purse I’ve ever painted, and as you can see it won’t be the last!
Gesso on canvas
Now that the small purse is finished, I’m working on an abstract design for the canvas bag. I wanted it a little wonky because, well I’m a little wonky and my style is a little wonky. It all fits don’t you think?
The colors will come next, and who knows what they will be? I just know that I have red, orange, and gold gesso to work with and anything else I’ll just have to work out with what I have.
Wish me luck. Painting on a black surface like this is tricky, and it takes a lot of gesso and a love of wonky!

Try It You’ll Like It!
If you haven’t discovered Shirley Trevena yet, she is an interesting artist. In this video, she is pretty much starting in the beginning talking about the paper to use, and how water reacts with different types of paper. Watch it and see what you think. Can you learn something you didn’t know, or had forgotten about. Can you use any of the information she is sharing?
My hope is that this video will kickstart your new year with new ideas, or an idea that triggers something you had forgotten.

Last Painting of 2016
As we look to the end of the year, I wrap up the last painting for 2016. This is a watercolor painting I collages, and did a little zentangle on. When I finished I coated it with mat medium. The experiments keep coming, but it’s time now to finish up my shopping, and wrapping. I only have a few gifts to get which consist mostly of money. As time goes on that will be the only thing the kids want, and Papa and myself will no longer be able to bring in the surprises by way of a letter to the North Pole!
Tuesday night kicked off Christmas celebration with a family dinner at my son, and daughter-in-law’s home. All the cousins, brothers, and sisters, and the parental units (that’s us)!
Everything will move fast now, we are so close to Christmas Eve. The Eve is really my favorite because of the magic. Kids are always good, and usually anxious to go to bed at a decent hour. After all, the sooner you get to bed, the sooner you can get up.
It’s uncertain if I will get to post another blog prior to the new year, so I want to take this time to wish everyone a wonderful Holiday filled with love, and a safe and fun New Year’s Eve. May you all go into the New Year feeling full of love and hope for the year 2017.
